Wasps are one of the most high-demand summer pest calls across the Okanagan — and for good reason. Yellow jackets build large underground and wall-void nests that can contain thousands of workers by late summer, turning aggressive when disturbed. Bald-faced hornets construct paper nests in trees, eaves, and shrubs that grow to the size of a football by August. Paper wasps are the most common species found under deck railings, window frames, and roof overhangs throughout Kelowna. All three species can sting repeatedly and pose a serious risk to anyone with a venom allergy. BugMaster’s technicians are trained to safely locate and treat all wasp and hornet nest types — including underground yellow jacket colonies that homeowners rarely find on their own. Honey bees are handled as carefully as possible given their importance to the Okanagan’s agricultural ecosystem.

What types of wasps are common in Kelowna?

The most common stinging insects in the Okanagan are yellow jackets (which nest underground or in wall voids), bald-faced hornets (large paper nests in trees and eaves), and paper wasps (small open-comb nests under overhangs and railings). All three can sting repeatedly and become aggressive when their nest is disturbed.
Wasp colonies begin building in spring and reach peak size — and peak aggression — by late summer and early fall. August and September are when most sting incidents occur, as colonies have thousands of workers defending a large nest. Early treatment in spring, while nests are small, is the safest and easiest option.
DIY removal of established wasp nests is genuinely dangerous, particularly for underground yellow jacket colonies or large bald-faced hornet nests. Disturbing the nest can trigger a mass defensive response resulting in hundreds of stings. BugMaster’s technicians use appropriate protective equipment and targeted treatments to eliminate nests safely.
Yes, though we approach honey bee removal with extra care given their importance to the Okanagan’s agriculture and ecology. Where possible, we work to remove honey bee colonies as safely as possible rather than exterminating them. Contact us to discuss the best approach for your situation.
Underground yellow jacket colonies require targeted product application directly into the nest entrance, typically performed at dusk or dawn when workers are least active. BugMaster’s technicians are experienced with ground-nesting colony treatment and can locate nest entrances that aren’t always visible to homeowners.
